Which screen type is best for me?
Deciding which screen type is best depends on the needs of each customer as well as the budget and ability/willingness to customize. We first recommend reading through and watching the videos for each of the three screen type settings – each video is linked below. Note that screens can be mixed and matched, and you can use multiple screens and screen types on any OneGauge hub.
Phone/Tablet screens are best for budget installs since you can use your own device, and even large tablets are relatively inexpensive (often around $100). Installation is easy and you can mount a phone or tablet just about anywhere in the vehicle, including on the dash or windshield, with simple, non-permanent mounts, so this is ideal for classic vehicles whose owners do not want to modify the vehicle permanently. Setup is also quick and easy. The downside to these setups is that they are not idea for permanent installs due to the need to keep the device charged as well as power it on/off, but for advanced users there are ways to change the basic settings of your device to take care of these issues. OneGauge LCD screens are the ideal mid-tier option, with tons of options for customization and multiple sizes available. We have the most vehicle specific and universal mount options available for these screens, so for many vehicles we can offer drop-in solutions to replace your instrument cluster. The menus on these screens allow the user to adjust many aspects of the system on the fly. Screen designs cannot be modified as easily, however, as they can on the PiDash as a computer is required to adjust the design and then the design is uploaded to the screen via an SD card. OneGauge LCDs also do not support live mapping or cameras, which are supported by PiDash. LCD screen video here!
PiDash systems offer the most flexibility but at the highest cost. To reduce cost, customers can purchase an configure a PiDash system themselves or they can choose to purchase a complete, ready to install kit from OneGauge. The vast variety of screens available for use with PiDash (any HDMI screen) means we have seen customers use screens from 7″ to 28″ screens in a variety shapes, and widescreen options are available. Many features, such as live mapping or camera inputs, are only supported by PiDash systems as well. We have fewer vehicle specific mounts for these screens available though, so installs are often custom. PiDash video here!
